A-l-o-h-a, Merry Christmas, HAPPY NEW YEAR -
I really don't know where to start, so many things have happened since my last post.
We had a wonderful holiday in Hawaii on the Big Island at Kona. Karyn was our guest the first week, John Schneider the second week. We enjoyed the sites, our guests - but the second week I got ill & had to hang around our condo while Grandpa & John had all the fun. Karyn did not waste a minute - she did this, that, and just about everything she had on her to do list. We all attended the Temple, went to the beach, hung around the pool at our resort, shopped. Attending Church was very special & I must say the Hawaiians have some neat cultural things they like to do & we enjoyed watching them. From Kona on the west side where we stayed) to Hilo on the east side you have quite a panorama of sites. I called it traveling through 'desolation' to 'paradise' as there are great spaces of lava fields and then some spectacular views.Grandpa & John traveled around the island as John to avid hiker wanted to try his expertise. He almost did himself in! We did attend the First Presidency Devotional with John. And we were glad we did - as the talks were very spiritual.
Now for Christmas - we had supper with Hu, Diane, Hugo on the 22. Great pasta meal. exchange of presents & good visiting. On Dec 24 Hu drove us to the RED ARROW bus which we took to Calgary. Great way to travel in the cold weather - just sit & relax & let someone else do the stressful labor. There were four generations under one roof at the Redds. F-u-n! Nice to see how well we interacted with each other. We had a 37-lb turkey, dressing, gravy (made by the pro-Jim) plus etc etc. very delicious. I enjoyed Christmas Eve with the reenactment of the Nativity - with Bapa as narrator & the rest of us Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men, angels & of course, a doll for baby jesus! Singing of carols. Sitting by the beautifully lit Christmas tree & reminiscing about past Christmases. On BOXING DAY Jim & Jeff drove us to Canmore where we were able to visit with aunt Marge who was visiting her daughter Maggie at their week-end retreat. I'm glad we did. Looking out of the window we have a spectacular view of the Three Sisters.
We are happy to be home where we will celebrate New Year's.
Love to all and a Happy New Year!

High Priests' Social

some recent pix

174 Oeming Road - November, 2008

Quite an unusual November for Edmonton weatherwise. Heavy winds just about blew us over. No snow. Some sunny days.
We have kept busy. Grandpa has driven me here, there, everywhere as I've had to take better care of my leg!! However I have now returned to do my stint at the temple - I have the pm shift. Grandpa comes the last session to do either endowment, initiatory, or assist at the baptism so he can have the car & then we drive home together. That is our Friday 'date'.
We are going to spend Christmas in Calgary so it will be quite an experience after 3 years. Since coming to Edmonton we have had Christmas with the Edmonton Youngs, the Prince George Youngs - this year it will be with the Redds
I have resumed quilting & have really enjoyed this. Made some Christmas gifts, also a quilt
We've had the missionaries for dinner - real neat fellows - very spiritual & knowledgeable.
Grandpa had quite a cold - sure hung on a long time.
We attended the High Priests' Social lately - a potluck & a 'Who Am I ' game Everyone wrote some humorous or unusual event that took place in their lives. Quite a hilarious evening. I brought my famous 'glazed chicken wings' which were wolfed down.Great camaraderie.
It has been fun shopping for gifts for the greatgrandchildren.
Happy American Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving on Oeming Road

Hello -
We celebrated such a lovely Thanksgiving I feel I want to share our good fortune with you. I went to the Internet for some new ideas & found out that their menus were almost identical to ours. I had a friend come over & help me prepare the feast. We gave the turkey a good rub from a recipe on the Internet. Our menu included turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage salad, peas, corn. My very own pickled beets & Grandpa's very own tomatoes - we had a bumper crop. Katie brought pumpkin pies made from pumpkins she grew in her garden. After dinner i had my friend tell about the origin of this Canadian holiday - very interesting. Hu brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Reminded me of the times when we went camping - he would scrounge around & bring me a bouquet of sild flowers to adorn our table. Some things never change.
Katie & Jason are moving to Slave lake this weekend. Jason got a good teaching job there in the highschool. I hear that it is a picturesque town with parks, library, swimming pool. There is a vibrant branch of the Church. Hu visits this branch in his capacity as Stake Sunday School President. We hope to drive up & visit them some weekend - stay in a hotel & get acquainted with the area.
We attended Stake Conference this past weekend - very good talks & counsel. Hu gave the opening prayer on Sunday. Very articulate & spiritual
Good news from Spencer & Nora this morning - their baby is a boy - so I better hustle & get some blue fabric for a quilt!

October - Oeming Road

Well, here we are - September is history & October & Thanksgiving are upon us. We have had some beautiful sunny weather & it was pure joy going for walks in the environs.
Jam/jelly making is done! But I do have some cranberry juice which I will make up whenever.
We had a wonderful holiday to lake O'Hara courtesy of Coleen/Hu/Karyn/John. It is a beautiful spot in Yoho National Park, just over the border from Alberta. Many hikers come here. And though their season is short, they are booked solid. We met interesting guests & did a hike around the lake - it was a challenge & we won't do it again. Funny, years ago Grandpa said we did the hike & it must have been easy because I don't remember the hazards we encountered this time. One thing I learned - faith & fear cannot exist. When I was fearful I was frightened & was ready to give up. When I had faith I had confidence & kept going.
I saw a stage production of Pride & Prejudice at the Citadel Theatre. Very beautifully done. We also attended the dinner theatre in Rosebud (a drive of about 3 h) courtesy of Hu. Driving back was a challenge - fog patches so much of the way. Good thing Hu was at the wheel.
We have resumed our FHE study group - every 2 wks. We are studying The Articles of Faith by James Talmadge. I love the way he expresses himself - sometimes I consult the dictionary just to make sure I understand the word.
Grandpa has done a little work in the campaign office of our MP. Elections are Oct 14.
The highlight of every week is reading the e-mails from Elder Schneider & Sisar Redd. We feel like we are their companions in their missionary labors.
The General Conference was special & Calgary getting a Temple! Maybe we should move back? But we enjoy our Condo here.

about crabapples - family affair

Crabapple pickers

Grandpa reading

Gig's pix

174 Oeming Road

Hello All -
It has been some time since I last posted. Too busy with canning, freezing, jam/jelly making. Grandpa is the best berry picker. He has picked saskatoons, chokecherries, cranberries as well as picked rhubarb& crabapples (at the neighbors) I have now quite a cupboard full of preserves & chutneys, relishes, & jams/jellies plus of course his favorite fruit -apricots.
I flew to Seattle to visit Coleen,Rachel, & the twins. Had a lot of fun with them. When Coleen took us to the Childrenès Museum I fell & was out of commission for a spell. In fact, I still ache. Octagenarians seem to lose their balance easily & I realize I have to be more careful. I did watch the twins for an hour or two in the day when Coleen had to run errands. I read to the twins, watched them while they were in the bathtub, watched Mr Einstein with them (very neat DVD) much better than The Incredibles. I enjoyed watching them play in the fenced-in play area that Grandpa Oliver designed to keep them from running hither & thither.
We have concentrated on our callings with the Single Adults & YSA & have had them to our home for a meal - it is easier to handle i or 2 or 3- takes a bit of energy but makes us feel that we are meeting their needs & getting to know them better.
We had Hugo over one morning & I taught him some cooking techniques - like frying eggs (easy over), making toast & hot chocolate. He learns quickly. grandpa lead the reading from the New Era & we had a very good discussion - he is a very good reader & can contribute to a discussion. We also had ivy & Blake for several hours one day. We did a variety of things - even watched the video - The Secret Garden. It is amazing how they understood the plot & the names of the characters.
kate & the boys came over & we picked crabapples from our neighbor's garden. Ben was right in there picking & enjoying it. I have returned to work at the Temple but have come home exhausted- I may need a later-in-the-day shift. Getting up at 5 am may be too taxing for me.
We attended a neat Ward party with Hu & Hugo last week. Different people had they special culinary displays for tasting - Hudson's hooch, spinach dip, Sam's jam, jamaica salsa, cinnamon pull-aparts, carmeled apples, peanut butter sesame bars, raisin bread, empenadas, cedarplanked salmon, chili. delicious food. Everyone brought a caesar salad . The ward provided the corn on the cob. They had a Musical Chairs game- quite a few chairs. Hugo won the prize. A most enjoyable social evening.

Busy July

Hello -
I can hardly believe that July is almost over. We have enjoyed the month & were able to do some interesting things.
We got our tickets 'on points' for Hawaii Big Island for 2 weeks at the end of November. Hopefully we will have good weather. We have a 2-bedroom condo & have guests coming for one-week stays.
We were able to visit Aunt Marge in Pincher Creek & see the sites around the foothills. We also stopped in Calgary at the Redds & were also able to visit my sister Zennie & Grandpa's cousin Ray Young. Both were surprise visits
We canned apricots - Grandpa's favorite canned fruit. Made jams, chutneys, froze saskatoons which is another favorite. Grandpa went to a u-pic k place & brought me 2 ice cream bucket which I had to sort out & freeze.
Tomorrow I see my doctor who performed my knee surgery. I will see what he says. I am walking quite well, but still need rest. I would love to return to work in the Temple - but I find it hard to stand. So we will see.
Grandpa has gone to watch Hugo play football & accompanied Hu & Hugo to see the Junior Baseball Finals. Teams from many countries have congregated in Edmonton for this tournament.
We drove to Vegreville to visit my brother in the hospital but he was sent to the University Hospital where an operation will be performed on his ruptured gall bladder.
We hope to enjoy an annual pot-luck in our complex this week. My contribution will be a Sausage Pilaf - a family favorite.
We travel to Rosebud Theatre for their dinner theatre -Fiddler on the Roof. This is an annual outing.
I fly to Seattle to get reacquainted with the twins.
Enjoy the summer.

Schneiders off to wedding

"Three Lovlies"

June happenings at Oeming Rd

Hello All-
A HOT Sabbath day! But we are experiencing summer, so we won't complain.
Grandpa is kept busy watering the flower pots on the deck. They are beginning to look lovely after the cold windy spring we have had. Can't believe that 2008 is half over! What have we really done? One thing-Grandpa is over his cold & I have abandoned my crutches, my cane, and although a bit wobbly I was able to walk to the podium at Sacrament Meeting to offer the closing prayer. I still use my walking stick when we go out for our walks - now in the early morning when it is so fresh. Grandpa found another walking path so we are glad for a new venture.
We have attended the Temple 2X this month - which has been quite a feat for me. Hope that I will be able to return as an ordinance worker - but I still find it hard to be on my feet for too long a time.
We hosted a BBQ & Potluck for our FHE evening group. I had organized some activities so everyone appeared very happy to have attended.
The Schneiders arrived for the wedding of OJ's niece so we had them visit for several days. Rachel wanted me to teach her Ukrainian cooking. We had a good time learning how to make borsch, holubsti, nalysnyky, nachynka, fruit compote. She was a real trouper & we made a special dinner out of our labors for OJ, Coleen, Lindsay, John, G & G & of course Rachel. (dooze smachna) (very tasty)
Lindsay stayed an extra day so we were able to have a good heart to hear as well as a brunch on the deck.
We hope some of you will put us on your holiday plans - just let us know in advance.
We were happy to attend a BBQ at the Thompsons - Jason's convocation. Also had the Schneiders for dessert John's convocation. Congratulations to you both.
Love to all

Mother's Day

Home Again

Hello all -
It is over one month since I “blogged”. Much has happened in the interim.I will send some pix which will help you realize that life goes on whether partying, shovelling snow, reading to grandchildren, lying in a hospital bed,or celebrating Mothers’ Day. We’ve been there & know what we are talking about.
We,ve had some unusual weather as you will see Grandpa shovelling snow off our deck. We’ve enjoyed having the ggrandchildren over. Mother’ day was special as Coleen, OJ & Hu prepared a wonderful brunch.
I am recuperating from my knee replacement surgery - takes time. I begin bona fide physio this week. Up to now I have had exercises I did at home - even had some RS siters come & help with the difficult ones.
The weather is finally getting ‘springy’ so that buoys up the spirit.
Hope all is well with you all. Let me know - you know I am interested in your lives.

floral bouquet from Aaron/Patti

in Victoria with Aaron

Easter pix

Happy belated Easter to all -
We did not celebrate this wonderful holiday on our own - after Sacrament meeting ( which was so uplifting) we went to the ferry to meet Aaron & Patti. It was good to see them & have them for the afternoon. They brought us a beautiful bouquet of flowers, fruit salad for the dinner & Aaron remembered the candies that grandpa always carried in the car - & brought a can of these! Grandpa was pleased. We put Aaron behind the wheel & enjoyed a trip to Victoria where we visited the Lieutenant's-Governor's mansion - the grounds are beautifully landscaped. Then on to the Empress where we had a look-see, especially the 'tea' room. Viewed the Inner Harbor then returned home for a sumptuous dinner. Sure nice to have such good guests!
Enjoy the pix -

Easter at Sidney

Belated Easter Greetings to all -
We spent a very nice Easter here in Sidney. Attended Sacrament meeting - very nice - good spirit. The talks were exceptional. We then left to pick up Aaron/Patti at the ferry. How nice to see them! We had Aaron drive the car, Grandpa was the navigator - Patti & I in the back - i couldn't even be a back-seat driver - Aaron was so good at the wheel it was a joy to know his reflexes were superb. We went to Vuctoria & toured the Lieutenant-Governor's mansion. The grounds were lovely. Then we drove to the Empress We showed them around especially the tea room. We viewed the inner harbor & then it was time to drive home for our dinner. It was a sumptuous affair. Patti had made a fruit salad & with the help of Lunn's bakery & deli we had ham & also buns & lemon pie. We got fresh veggies (and plenty of them) so we really had a feast. A/P had to catch the 6:00 pm ferry, so we did not waste any time. We had a good visit.
Now I am preparing to fly home to Edmonton Friday. Hu will meet Grandpa at the Vancouver Airport & drive home (Monday) And reality will come!
Hope all is well with A-L-L!!

'Island Dwellers'

Hello -
I feel guilty not having posted for ages....but we are on holiday! It is hard to imagine that we are nearing the end of our stay on the Island. We spent one month in Victoria and are now settled in Sidney for the rest of our stay here. So far, so good. We had visitors - first Karyn & Elena & Jim. The girls enjoyed 'tea' at the Empress & of course we had our treat of fish 'n chips. Coleen & OJ came on the Clipper from Seattle & stayed Friday-Saturday. We went to Chemainus dinner theatre - walked, shopped, visited, got caught up with the latest family affairs. This past Saturday we went as foot passengers on the ferry to Vancouver. Aaron met us & we all went to Janice's for a sumptuous breakfast & had a good 'heart to heart' visit. We invited Aaron & Patti for Easter dinner & hope we can enjoy this time together & get to know Patti better.
Our computers keep us busy. We walk a lot even though the weather has not been that exciting - mostly overcast with a limited amount of sunshine. But it is nice to get out into the fresh air. Grandpa has done quite a bit of reading. I have worked on some quilting projects - brought my little portable Singer sewing machine. First article of furniture Grandpa bought me after we were married. It still can sew a mean seam (I did take it in for maintenance)
It is amazing that we meet people at Church with whom we have had some past 'connections'.Small, small world.
Grandpa has watched the curling Tim Horton'a Briar. Alberta has been undefeated thus far.
We have met some interesting 'Snow Birds'
We love to receive e-mail & thank you all that have e-mailed or blogged/ We feel quite close to you even though we are far away.
Love to all

Editing my blog

Hi -
Sorry I have the wrong address - I was thinking one thing & typing another & didn't edit. 174 Oeming Road is ofcourse the correct address, so don't be confused.

107 Oeming Road

Hello from the land of c-o-l-d!! I hear the wind a-blowing round the corners of the house. It's -23* with a wind chill of -40*. Not a nice night to be out. We did make it to Church & now it is too cozy at home to be out & about.
What an exciting month January has been. We've been able to walk outdoors when the weather has been nice. I have been able to spend a week at the Redds in Calgary - had a nice break & also got my teeth looked after!! Nice to meet with old friends & acquaintances, but best of all to see grandchildren in their own setting.Elena & Peter showed the dance steps of the jive & swing - fun to watch. Hugo has designed jerseys for his floor hockey tournament & Grannie was able to use 'heat 'n bond' to glue on the names of the various teams. Yesterday he came over & we worked on the numbers of each player. Hugo traced using a stencil while Grannie cut & ironed the numbers to the shirts. Hu invited Grandpa to see the movie 'The Man from Plains' at the Citadel - a great film of President Jimmy Carter who, while in office was highly criticized but now appears to be quite a hero!
We celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary by dining at Red Lobster - I think I have had plenty of sea food for awhile.
We are preparing to leave for our vacation to Victoria & Sydney. Jim & Grandpa will drive. Karyn, Elena & I will fly . They will spend the weekend with us. The girls will go to 'tea' at the Empress
Hotel - their menu never changes.
We just got news President Hinckley passed away - what a great man he was - we will always remember him for the wonderful example he was to us all.
Love to all
